State highway deaths dramatically lower in 2010

The traffic fatality total could be 100 fewer than last year.

Oklahoma is on track to have the lowest number of traffic deaths in nearly two decades, according to data the Oklahoma Highway Patrol released Monday.

As of Sunday, 621 people had died from wrecks on Oklahoma roads this year. That number is down from 729 in the same time frame last year.

With four days remaining in 2010, this year likely will have the lowest number since 1992, when 619 traffic deaths were recorded, Capt. Chris West, a Department of Public Safety spokesman, said Monday.

"There's a real possibility that we'll have more than 100 fewer traffic deaths than last year," West said. "That's some really good news."

Traffic fatalities have been declining since 800 deaths were recorded in 2005.

West said law enforcement officials usually consider three factors that can save lives in collisions: education, engineering and enforcement.
