The resurfacing work on Highway 97 is being done as part of a preventative maintenance strategy, said Mark Zishka, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation construction engineer for this division.
Zishka said roads such as Highway 97 need resurfacing about once every eight to 10 years. Engineers selected Highway 97 as needing repaving.
Kenna Mitchell, ODOT spokeswoman, said Becco contractors won the $2.5 million bid to repave the about 8 1/2-mile long stretch of highway. They were awarded the bid about two months ago, Mitchell said.
During construction, Highway 97 has been narrowed down to a lane in each direction. The work has caused some traffic tie-ups in south Sand Springs, and the work, which coincides with other construction projects across the area, has led to frustration for many motorists. FULL ARTICLE
