State Question 744 weighed

Both sides stick to their arguments during a forum at Oklahoma City University.

Proponents of the constitutional amendment State Question 744 called its opponents' stance "doom and gloom" and "scare tactics" during a forum Thursday night.

Opponents shot back that supporters were banking on a "magic money tree" and using "smoke screens" to dodge the real issue.

SQ 744, if passed, will mandate that Oklahoma spends the regional average per student on education in the future.

Richard Johnson, chairman of the Oklahoma City University Political Science Department, moderated the forum held at the university's business school.

"This is really a once in a generation opportunity to make a change in the way we invest in our schools," said Joel Robinson, chief lobbyist for the Oklahoma Education Association and a spokesman for Yes on 744.
