One of Oklahoma’s biggest issues this year will be decided on November 2. Oklahomans will decide if State Question 744 will change Oklahoma’s education funding to match that of the surrounding states.
State Question 744, also known as the Helping Oklahoma Public Education Act, could be an Oklahoma constitutional amendment, which would require the state to meet the average amount of funding per student to the regional average. In other words, it would require an increase of $1.7 billion over the next three years.
SQ744 has caused a great deal of controversy among politicians and educators. Politicians such as Governor Brad Henry, State Superintendent candidate Janet Barrisi, and governor candidates Mary Fallin and Jari Askins, along with organizations such as One Oklahoma Coalition oppose SQ744.
Henry delivered a speech on September 21 addressing his concerns with the proposal.
“From a policy standpoint, it’s a no brainer,” Henry said. “It will absolutely devastate the budgets of all other critical areas in state government.” FULL ARTICLE
