One highway improvement alone saves dozens of Oklahoman lives a year, the Oklahoma Secretary of Transportation told a joint meeting of the Alva Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs Wednesday at Champs.
Speaking was Gary Ridley.
The improvement: barriers to prevent crossover collisions on multilane interstate highways.
“In 2000, we started to see an increase in fatalities where people would cross the median for whatever reason and hit somebody head-on,” Ridley said. “These are not fender- benders. These are not accidents people walk away from.”
In a four-year period, from 35 to 40 people were killed each year in crossover collisions. As funds were provided, ODOT began installing cable barriers or concrete barriers. More than 400 miles of barriers are in place with another 80 to 90 to go... FULL ARTICLE
