Small communities will receive about $26 million in stimulus dollars for sidewalk upgrades and other improvements to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The state’s Transportation Commission on Monday approved contracts for 18 projects in small communities, said Terri Angier, spokeswoman for the state Transportation Department.
Angier said $14 million was set aside by the federal government for projects in smaller communities. The department allocated additional funds for pedestrian improvement projects.
"These are highly visible projects,” Angier said. "It’s very significant for a lot of these communities.”...
