Street repair vote at Oklahoma City Council meeting prompts wider strategy discussions

A few items related to streets at Tuesday's Oklahoma City Council meeting prompted a wider discussion of the city's strategy for widening and repairing roads.

The Oklahoma City Council on Tuesday opted to spend $8 million of surplus money on streets and debated about the city's overall strategy for addressing what residents say is their biggest concern.

The city projects a rainy-day fund of $54 million, which is almost 15 percent of the city's budget for this fiscal year. Councilmen Larry McAtee of Ward 3 and Pat Ryan of Ward 8 recently proposed $8 million of the rainy-day fund be used to resurface city streets.

Streets in sprawling Oklahoma City remain at the top of residents' list of complaints, despite a sizable portion of the budget devoted to street maintenance.

The expenditure would leave almost 12.5 percent of the budget for this fiscal year in reserve, well above the minimum of 8 percent that city policy requires.
