SHAWNEE, Okla. — The goal of widening a mile-long stretch of Gordon Cooper Drive in Tecumseh is progressing closer to reality with an agreement reached Monday night for what is expected to be a $2.4 million project.
Sealing a deal that’s been 20 years in the making, the Tecumseh City Council approved a project agreement with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation after first okaying a resolution for federal aid. The future project will make Gordon Cooper Drive between Bob Crouch Drive and Benson Park Road a four-lane roadway.
Mayor Eddy Parker said the city’s been working many years to get that last 1.3-mile stretch of Gordon Cooper Drive widened from a two-lane to a four-lane.
Dan Overland, chairman of the ODOT commission, addressed the council Monday and shared news from Monday’s ODOT meeting.
“For many years...as long as I can remember, we’ve discussed the opportunity to widen Gordon Cooper Drive...It’s finally coming to fruition,” Overland said.
ODOT will provide the plans and the city will complete the environmental study, he said, then the next step of obtaining easements and rights-of-way falls on the city’s shoulders... FULL ARTICLE
