Every Oklahoman wants quality education for their kids, delivered by devoted and highly regarded educators in a fiscally responsible way. Virtually no Oklahoman, however, wants a state education system defined by senseless spending, a bloated administrative bureaucracy and virtually no accountability for performance. Unfortunately, that's exactly what the passage of State Question 744 would reinforce.
SQ 744 amends the state constitution so that the annual education budget is pegged to the regional average per-pupil expenditure. In other words, 744 would dramatically reconfigure what Oklahoma spends on public education by linking per-pupil spending to an average of what is spent in our neighboring states.
This approach makes as much sense as determining how much you should spend on groceries each week based only on what your neighbors spend, regardless of the size of their families or the quantity of food they typically purchase.
