Normally, a crushing defeat in an election would bring high-fives and warm fuzzies from the victors for a job well done. But there isn't much worth celebrating now that the fight over State Question 744 is over.
In energy and money, it was an exhausting and expensive fight. Oklahoma is fortunate voters saw through the fiction offered up by the pro-744 campaign. The proponents' characterization as greedy those opposed to the question has been put to rest. There's simply no way the 80 percent of Oklahoma voters who weighed in against 744 can collectively be described as greedy or unsupportive for public education.
If either were true, neither the Oklahoma Education Association nor its national counterpart would have fought so hard or spent so much for 744's passage. If either were true, taxpayers across Oklahoma would not have a long history of supporting school bond issues for transportation, technology and capital improvements despite a 60 percent approval requirement...
