Timeout for gray bats: Road project on hold while ODOT examines water issue

While the gray bats are in their winter caves in Arkansas and Missouri, the Oklahoma Department Transportation still thought of them and put a highway project between Okay and Wagoner on hold this winter.

“Any time we do a highway construction project we have to consider possible impacts to everything from historic properties to fish, wildlife, insects, and there is a comprehensive study,” said Transportation Department spokeswoman Kenna Mitchell.

The Oklahoma 16 rebuild was studied years prior and precautions were in place, but with Oklahoma’s wet autumn and plenty of water around the work zone, water diversion plans had to be changed and that meant the water impacts needed a fresh look, she said... FULL ARTICLE
