Although we see highway signs daily, are there some we don't understand?

Closing the gap between just seeing something and understanding is sort of like the difference between having a crossword puzzle and actually solving it.
One such example would be highway signs and safety measures. You see them, perhaps every day. But do you understand their purpose?
Take for instance those yellow barrels near bridge piers and other structures. The first barrel has 200 pounds of sand placed in a spacer about the height a bumper would strike it.
The subsequent barrels also have spacers with increasing amounts of sand. The back barrels are filled with 2,100 pounds of sand.
