— Sen. Mike Mazzei of Tulsa is taking an indefinite medical leave of absence from his legislative duties because of a back injury, it was announced Monday.

Mazzei, a Republican, suffered a serious back injury during a 2008 traffic accident.

A statement taped to the door of Mazzei's legislative office said: "He has undergone multiple procedures and therapy protocols over the past year to restructure and stabilize his spine. Although the therapy was successful, the resulting nerve damage will require bed rest for 6 to 8 weeks to facilitate the healing process. Sen. Mazzei deeply appreciates the support he has received during this arduous and difficult process."

Mazzei, a certified financial planner, said his absence would be short, so he will not forgo his legislative salary. Lawmakers are paid $38,400 a year, with more possible for additional responsibilities.

Mazzei, who was elected to the Senate in 2004 and began serving in 2005, said he could not estimate how much of the last legislative session he missed because of the injury... FULL ARTICLE
