Tulsa mayor calls for panel on Arkansas River development

An effort to establish a river authority that would operate as a financial tool for redevelopment of the Arkansas River from Sand Springs to Bixby has been launched by Mayor Dewey Bartlett.

"This is about the mayor kick-starting the talk, the planning and the movement of river development, but in a way we think will ensure better success," said Mayoral Chief of Staff Terry Simonson.

"The river does run through it," Simonson said, referring to the linkage of the cities along its banks, Tulsa County and the River Parks Authority.

"It is our new main street, and every city needs to be at the table, not only for overall improvements to the river flow and creation of small lakes, but for their own riverfront projects unique to their areas," he said.
