SQ 744 is the best known issue before voters. The result of an initiative petition, it would mandate that the Legislature spend at least as much on public schools, on a per-pupil basis, as the average of surrounding states. The measure would lead to large tax increases, huge cuts to every other area of state government or both. It also represents an abandonment of the state’s right to govern itself, giving control over our state budget to other states’ legislatures.
While public schools need more money, this is the wrong way to get there and the measure should be rejected.
