Department of Public Safety officials report a decrease in
traffic fatalities for the month of March, 2009. Fatalities for March
were down one for a total of 56, compared to 57 in the same month last
year.
There were two pedestrian fatalities and five motorcycle
fatalities in March. The highest daily fatality numbers include 12
deaths on Sundays, then dropping to 11 on Thursdays and nine on
Tuesdays. There were seven deathless days in the month of March.
Five
of the fatality crashes were alcohol-related, in the opinion of the
investigating state, county or municipal officer. There were 39 male
and 17 female victims. Fifty-four of the victims were Oklahoma
residents with only two nonresidents.
Ten of the fatality victims
were 20 or under. The leading number of fatalities by age group were 12
each in the 31-to 40 year-olds and 41-to 50 year-olds dropping to ten
in the 21-to 30 year-old category. Leflore County led the state in
fatalities with a fatality count of five there were four in Oklahoma
County and three in Tulsa County.
Forty-nine percent of those who
died in traffic collisions were not wearing safety belts at the time of
the crash, according to DPS statistics. Unsafe speed and failure to
stop were the leading causes of death in March.
There were 50
fatality crashes in the month of March. The highest number of crashes
were on County Roads with 20 dropping to eleven on State Highways and
ten on US Highways.
There have been 745 fatalities recorded for the year 2008 compared to 766 in the year 2007.
