Senate Republicans will vote on a proposed earmark ban as lawmakers gather for a postelection session

WASHINGTON — Oklahoma Republican Sens. Tom Coburn and Jim Inhofe are expected to square off next week in an intense internal debate over lawmakers' pet projects that could result in Senate Republicans voting for a moratorium on earmarks.
Inhofe, R-Tulsa, was all over the media last week speaking against the ban, to be proposed by Sen. Jim DeMint, a South Carolina Republican, and told The Oklahoman that he would defy it if it's approved by current and incoming Republican senators.
“I'm not going to join a crowd that is not doing what it is supposed to do,” Inhofe said.
The debate over earmarks will occur during a postelection session of Congress that was expected to focus on tax cuts and other hot-button issues like gays in the military. However, the new realities on Capitol Hill — Republicans will take over the House next year and control more seats in the Senate — could mean many tough votes are put off until 2011... FULL ARTICLE
