USDOT awards grant to Muskogee Port

Efforts to secure federal funding for a much needed rail modernization project at the Port of Muskogee succeeded after past efforts faltered just short of the finish line.

Federal transportation officials announced on Friday the award of a $5.7 million BUILD Transportation grant to the Muskogee City-County Port Authority. The funding, which requires an equal match, will be used to fund a project necessary to provide modern locomotives access to the Port of Muskogee.

Access is limited now to four-axle locomotives because the arc of the railroad tracks entering the port is too narrow. Six-axle locomotives have become the industry standard, and the smaller locomotives are being phased out of existence.

News of the grant came 10 months after port officials learned their third application for a grant through the highly competitive Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery program was denied.
