Voters to consider changes to judge-nominating panel

- A state question on the Nov. 2 ballot would make changes to a relatively obscure panel charged with helping in the selection of state judges.

The Judicial Nominating Commission selects nominees for judicial posts when vacancies occur. It forwards three candidates to the governor, who then selects a judge from that list.

The commission has 13 members. Six are attorneys elected from each of the six congressional districts that existed in 1967. Members of the bar association in each district elect the attorneys who serve on the commission.

The other seven members are non-lawyers. Six are appointed by the governor. Not more than three can belong to any one political party. The 13th member is selected by other members of the Judicial Nominating Commission.
