Women Play Increasingly Vital Role in Transportation

As we celebrate International Women’s Day this year, 13 women are currently serving or have been nominated to serve as chief executives of the 52 transportation department agencies represented by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials: the largest number of female state DOT chief executives ever in the industry’s history.

This is a critical milestone in more ways than one, as women executives, engineers, and other professionals provide different points of view and approaches to help address the many challenges facing the transportation industry.

“Gender parity is not just the right thing to do; we know now that it helps to yield better decisions because we bring new ideas to the table and think about things differently,” Leslie Richards, secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, recently explained. “Studies show that companies and organizations with female leadership and more diversity perform better. This makes sense because I’ve seen firsthand how diverse perspectives help us to identify innovative solutions to problems that affect everyone. Having diverse perspectives makes any team more effective, and the same goes for managing transportation assets.” FULL ARTICLE
