Work on widening the state's two urban turnpikes should begin in late spring,Oklahoma Turnpike Authority members were told Thursday.
Authority members voted to seek a $178 million bond issue to widen seven-mile sections of the Kilpatrick and Creek turnpikes.
Lanes inside the Creek Turnpike fromU.S. 75 to Memorial Drive in Tulsa will be added, and inside lanes will be added along the Kilpatrick Turnpike from Eastern Avenue to MacArthur Boulevard in Oklahoma City.
Traffic counts on both toll roads have been significantly higher than original projections.
Tolls will not be increased to pay for the widening projects, said state Transportation Secretary Gary Ridley, who also serves as director of the Turnpike Authority. Tolls were last increased in August 2009.
