Buttigieg opens applications for money to build large infrastructure projects

The Transportation Department is rolling together the application process for three programs worth $2.9 billion

 Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is asking cities and states on Wednesday to submit their most ambitious infrastructure proposals for federal funding, seeking ideas for projects that would boost local economies across the country.
 “We’re talking about what I often call the cathedrals of our infrastructure,” Buttigieg said.
 The money will flow through a new program the Transportation Department calls the National Infrastructure Project Assistance program or Mega program, designed to fund large projects expected to cost more than $500 million. Winning projects could include roads, bridges, tunnels, ports or rail lines — infrastructure that might be shared by more than one state and otherwise struggle to attract sufficient funding.
