Famous bridge begins massive renovation

The nearly 4,000-foot-long Bridgeport Pony Bridge on Route 66 has not changed much since its construction in the 1930s and when the Joad family from “The Grapes of Wrath” drove over it on their way to California during the Dust Bowl.

The two-lane bridge has been unable to support the traffic that has increased significantly in the past decades.

While some plans included demolishing the bridge or closing it to vehicular traffic, instead, the bridge will be widened by four feet and the 38 pony trusses that give the bridge its name will be reattached to maintain its visual aesthetic.
