Every town has a road the teenagers dared each other to drive after dark. It's usually unlit, a little too narrow, and wrapped in a story that gets better each time it's told. For me, it was Shades of Death Road in New Jersey, number 2 on this list. No matter how many times my friends and classmates told different stories about this haunted road, it always sent chills down my spine.

This list picks up where our original haunted roads list left off, with a fresh lineup and a closer look at where each legend actually came from. Sometimes that's a forgotten news item, sometimes a country song, and sometimes nothing anyone has managed to pin down.
