Hoping to avoid a bumpy drive? These cities have the worst roads in the country, says new study

(NEXSTAR) – There’s nothing like driving on a newly paved road. No potholes, no random bumps in the road, just a smooth ride.

Unfortunately, the majority of roads aren’t like this at all, despite states spending historically high amounts of money on highways.

A new study from MoneyGeek analyzed data from the U.S. Department of Transportation to rank every state’s road quality and identify which has the roughest roads.

To assess road conditions nationwide, MoneyGeek developed a “Roughness Index” that evaluates pavement quality using Federal Highway Administration standards, which classify road surfaces as good, acceptable, or poor.

The higher the “Roughness Index” score, the worse a state’s roads are.
