How does a zipper merge work, and why do troopers say so many Oklahomans get it wrong?

Construction zones are common across Oklahoma this summer, and many include zipper merges. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says the traffic pattern can reduce backups and improve safety, but only if drivers use it correctly.

TULSA, Okla. - Construction zones have become a familiar sight on highways across Green Country, bringing lane closures and slower traffic. One traffic pattern that continues to frustrate drivers is the zipper merge.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says it may seem counterintuitive, but using both lanes until the designated merge point is the safest and most efficient way to move traffic through a work zone.
