OKLAHOMA CITY - Drivers traveling eastbound on Interstate 44 near Northwest Expressway should prepare for delays as a major construction project in northwest Oklahoma City gets underway.
Construction on the section of eastbound Interstate 44 began overnight, narrowing traffic and creating backups early Tuesday morning. The project focuses on the eastbound I-44 bridge over Classen Circle.
As part of the project, crews will remove and replace portions of the bridge deck, barriers and medians to extend the life of the structure and improve safety for motorists.
Transportation officials said nearly 200,000 drivers use eastbound I-44 each day, making the corridor one of the busiest in the Oklahoma City metro area.
