Officials look to strengthen wrong-way driving prevention on Oklahoma turnpikes

A wrong-way driver was stopped on the Kilpatrick Turnpike before a crash. Now officials say prevention starts at the exit ramp.

OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma City police spotted a driver going the wrong way down the Kilpatrick Turnpike during a scary situation early Monday morning.

The driver was arrested near MacArthur Boulevard following a police chase that began near Northwest 63rd Street. They were arrested for driving under the influence.

The incident ended without a crash, but the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority said preventing the next wrong-way driver starts long before law enforcement ever turns their lights on. It starts at the exit ramp.

Police said the driver was going east in the westbound lanes at about 1:30 a.m.
