Amid questions, protest and outright frustration, an amended Senate bill passed on Thursday would require the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority to submit a report to the Legislature on potential impacts of the planned South Extension Turnpike. Senate Bill 1610, originally intended to rename a bridge north of Shattuck in Western Oklahoma, is now an avenue for citizens and lawmakers to receive answers on what some view as a clandestine project in Norman. Sen. Rob Standridge, R-Norman, brought the amended legislation before the state's upper chamber in an effort to alleviate those concerns voiced by citizens over the past several weeks and Wednesday at the Capitol. "This does not stop that expansion," Standridge said. "It simply requires OTA (Oklahoma Turnpike Authority) to do some appropriate studies and make sure that that decision is thoroughly thought out before it's moved forward."
