Butterfly effect: OK transportation department tweaks practices to help save threatened species

MCALESTER, Okla. (KOKH) — The Oklahoma Department of Transportation doesn't just build and maintain roadways in the state.

They also lend a helping hand to the conservation efforts of flora and fauna.

During its monthly meeting this week, Transportation Secretary Tim Gatz invited ODOT's Natural Resources Program Manage Amber McIntyre to give a presentation about conservation efforts for a butterfly with a dwindling population.

The Eastern U.S. Frosted Elfin butterfly is under consideration right now for listing as Threatened or Endangered under the Endangered Species Act.
