The City Council will apply for federal grants totaling almost $3.4 million to finance the Lake Helen Trail and the Downtown Pedestrian Improvement projects.

The City of Lawton intends to submit applications to the Oklahoma Department of Transportation for “Transportation Alternatives Program” grants. Those provide resources for a variety of smaller-scale transportation alternative projects, such as pedestrian and bicycle facilities, recreational trails, safe routes to school projects, community improvements, and environmental mitigation.

City Hall applied for a $1,637,693 TAP grant for the Lake Helen Trail project. The grant requires local matching funds of at least 20%, or $327,538.
