OKLAHOMA CITY — Crews have broken ground on a major project to expand an Oklahoma highway.

Driving through the northeast part of the metro is about to get a little easier. Work has started on a major project to expand State Highway 33 from two lanes to four.

Drivers using the highway to connect Guthrie to Stillwater can expect construction delays for at least two years.

"We wanted to expand this from a two-lane corridor to a four-lane corridor for safety," said Bryce Boyer, the public information officer with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.

Phase one of a $30 million plan to widen SH-33 has begun. For the next two years, crews will build four new bridges and lay the groundwork for two additional lanes between Langston and US-177.
