Data shows Oklahoma ranks 44th in seat belt usage, new campaign aims to boost usage

OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLA (KOKH) — The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) and the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority (OTA) are launching a statewide campaign amid Oklahoma's low seat belt usage rate.

According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in 2023, Oklahoma ranked 44th in seat belt use, with a usage rate of 86%, below the national average of 91%. The study noted males aged 16 and older were especially at risk, particularly in rural areas where the usage can drop to 77%.
