Fuel Tax Legislation Reinforces Need for Alternative Highway & Bridge Funding Sources

Oklahoma City, OK, May 19, 2026 – Transportation Revenues Used Strictly for Transportation (TRUST), an advocacy group dedicated to funding and restoring Oklahoma’s surface transportation infrastructure, released the following statement today regarding the Oklahoma Legislature’s passage and Governor Kevin Stitt’s signing of HB 1370, a bill repealing a 1996 law that would automatically raise state fuel taxes if the federal motor fuel tax is suspended. The bill, passed and signed on the last day of the recently adjourned state legislative session, is in response to President Donald Trump’s recent call for federal fuel tax relief and ensures Oklahomans would realize full savings at the pump if the federal tax were suspended.

“The board of directors and members of TRUST are supportive of HB 1370 and applaud the Legislature and Governor Stitt for their timely action. Oklahomans are feeling the pinch at the pump, and HB 1370 will be beneficial if the federal government suspends its fuel tax. High fuel prices and this legislation absolutely shed light on an issue TRUST has been preaching for 20 years and that is that state and federal fuel taxes are only one piece of the highway and bridge funding equation, and they are not sufficient nor intended to be the sole source of surface transportation infrastructure funding. State leaders must continue to explore new and alternative funding sources to ensure Oklahoma continues to invest the needed resources into our statewide surface transportation network.”
