Key infrastructure nominee pitches ‘all of the above’ approach on roads

Shailen Bhatt was tapped to lead the Federal Highway Administration, overseeing investments in roads and bridges

Shailen Bhatt, the Biden administration’s pick to run the Federal Highway Administration, assured senators Wednesday that he is comfortable seeing major roads widened.

“I’ve added capacity in every state I’ve worked in,” said Bhatt, who previously ran the transportation departments of Delaware and Colorado.

It might seem an unsurprising comment from someone chosen to lead a road-building agency that will play a key role in overseeing the $1 trillion infrastructure law. But as the Biden administration seeks to curb emissions from transportation, the question of whether to widen highways — potentially locking in communities’ dependence on cars — has been a source of political debate.
