King Road Rehabilitation Project Underway at Lawton-Fort Sill Regional Airport

City of Lawton Madalynn ElKouri | Multimedia Specialist August 19, 2026

As part of the City of Lawton’s larger Citywide Rehabilitation Capital Improvement Program (CIP) Project, work is underway on King Road at the Lawton-Fort Sill Regional Airport. The project will improve the roadway directly in front of the airport terminal by addressing pavement, drainage and roadway base issues.

King Road provides direct access to the airport terminal for travelers, employees and visitors. Over time, sections of the roadway and the base beneath it have deteriorated. These improvements will help extend the life of the roadway while providing more reliable access to the airport.

On May 12, 2025, the Lawton City Council awarded the construction contract to Rudy Construction. The King Road Rehabilitation Project includes improvements to the underground stormwater drainage system, repairs to damaged pavement and the roadway base, and milling and resurfacing of the existing roadway.

Once complete, the project will provide better drainage, a stronger roadway and a smoother driving surface for those traveling to and from the Lawton-Fort Sill Regional Airport.

Construction is currently focused on drainage improvements near the airport terminal.

This week, crews installed and backfilled 12-inch reinforced concrete stormwater pipes, helping restore proper drainage in the area.

Next week, crews are expected to begin forming and pouring drainage boxes. Once the concrete has cured, crews will backfill the surrounding areas and install the grates and collars.

King Road remains an active roadway while work is underway. Motorists traveling to and from the airport should slow down, stay on the designated side of the roadway and follow all posted signs and instructions.

Drivers should also watch for construction crews, equipment and changing traffic patterns. Travelers are encouraged to allow extra time when arriving at or leaving the airport.

Additional weekly construction updates will be posted on the City of Lawton's CIP page under Lawton Fort Sill Regional Airport: King Road.
