CHEROKEE COUNTY, Okla. — The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) is urging anyone in the Fort Gibson area to stay clear of South Highway 80 in Cherokee County.
A rockslide that happened early Sunday morning is blocking a majority of the highway, and now residents will have to find an alternative route.
ODOT officials said small rocks do tend to fall near the side of Highway 80 and have never caused any issues, but they haven’t seen anything like this happen.
According to ODOT, they received a call at around 8 a.m. Sunday morning from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Lake Rangers and those who live nearby said they heard a large cracking sound near Highway 80.
They sent someone to take a look and found the rockslide. ODOT immediately set up barricades to keep traffic away from the rock slide.
