OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma lawmakers are pushing for a bill that seeks to install speed cameras in work zones to enhance safety and hold drivers accountable for speeding.

On a section of Interstate 40, where the speed limit is 55 mph, cameras have recorded drivers traveling as fast as 120 miles per hour. Randy Jones, a highway work zone contractor, recounted a near-fatal incident involving a speeding semi-truck.

"I was in the left lane. We had the left lane closed. Traffic was in the right, and the conditions were dusty from the removal of the stripe," Jones said. "He hit me. I was ejected off the machine, landed on the other side of the guardrail, and I’m here today saying, 'Thank the Lord.'"
