The May Avenue bridge over Northwest Expressway, one of the city’s busiest crossings, is set to be replaced as engineers seek to address years of safety concerns. The two roads connect to some of the city's busiest shopping destinations, including Penn Square Mall, and large employers, including Integris Baptist Medical Center. The bridge, built in 1952, has a height limit of 14 feet and 4 inches and is lower than modern standards. The bridge has partially collapsed at least twice when trucks hit crossing beams. "It's a lower bridge, and it's been struck a number of times due to over-height vehicles," said Eric Wenger, director of public works. "It does appear likely to be a bridge replacement so it can be built higher and won't be struck in the future."
