The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority (OTA) will add cable barriers to the Cherokee Turnpike.

The $11-million project will cover 32 miles between Chouteau and the Arkansas state line.

The state transportation secretary says the barriers will help save lives by preventing drivers from crossing medians into oncoming traffic.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol shared a video earlier this year of a cable barrier preventing a wreck when a semi slid off I-40 near Vian during a winter storm.
