When most Oklahomans think about deadly car accidents, they picture crowded interstates in Oklahoma City or heavy traffic in Tulsa. The data tells a different story.

While Oklahoma County and Tulsa County consistently lead the state in total fatal crashes because of population size, some of Oklahoma’s most dangerous roads are found far from the metro areas-in small rural counties where a single highway may account for multiple deaths each year.

According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data, Oklahoma County, Tulsa County, Cleveland County, Comanche County, and Canadian County routinely record the highest total number of fatal crashes in the state. Oklahoma City and Tulsa similarly lead Oklahoma cities in total fatalities, followed by Norman, Lawton, and Broken Arrow.
