The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is pledging to step up traffic enforcement along the Turner Turnpike following an inexplicable spike in construction zone crashes that have stressed local emergency responders and strained small towns along the highway.
In just the past couple of weeks, troopers responded to 22 crashes on the Turner Turnpike and of the 18 in which investigation has been completed, half involved semi-trailers. Eight of the crashes occurred in the three construction zones located in Bristow, Stroud and Wellston.
Some of the worst crashes took place in the six-mile construction zone east of Bristow. The road is being widened to six lanes as part of ACCESS Oklahoma and is due for completion in early 2026.
