Tulsa adding ban on drivers using cell phones in school zones, construction zones

A new ordinance aims to enhance safety in school and construction zones by cracking down on cell phone use while driving.

TULSA, Okla. - The City of Tulsa is updating local ordinances to mirror a new state law that prohibits drivers from using cell phones in construction and school zones. The update will allow Tulsa Police to write tickets for the violation that carries a maximum $100 fine.

Councilor Lori-Decter Wright said the Tulsa ordinance contains the same language as the state law, which took effect on Nov. 1.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is already issuing citations under the law, according to Lt. Mark Southall, who said the new language makes enforcement easier.
